Austin Grossman - Crooked

This is Grossman's version of Charlie Stross' "The Laundry Files". It's an alternate history of Nixon's (slightly awkward) political career, in which he's a champion of the States against the occult powered Soviet monster.

It has a fair bit of fun with the various personalities around at the time, but the best characters in it are easily the russian spies, who are walking stereotpes, which I loved.

But I'm not actually convinced it's a very good book. The plot tends to flail around a bit, and doesn't really have enough structure to make the overall conflict feel important or worthwhile.

I could try and read that as a meta-commentary on the fact that that entire range of history was a mess of greys, but I think it's more a failing of the book. Won't bother adding it to the archive.

Not recommended.
