Gorescript
Gorescript

Gorescript is a fast, frantic first person shooter, in the style of Doom, Quake and similar. Your weapons, enemies, the walls and everything else have a blocky appearance that is pleasingly retro.

The gameplay matches that appearance. It's a rapid-fire, enemy heavy gun and run, with some seriously difficult fights on the higher difficulty levels. It also has a reasonable set of monsters, ranging across pacman-like bitey terrors to ranged shooting triangles and elaborate hand like monsters.

To take out these monsters, you have a spread of the usual shotguns, rocket launchers (which you'll really enjoy when you get it), railguns and a big hammer. You might come to hate the hammer, as it has a particular weakness in that the melee is pretty awful. It's not easy to tell how close you need to be to strike the monsters and there's a lack of feedback that you've hit them. (There is a hitpoint bar, and they leave pleasant splats everywhere, but the actual hit feels ineffective.)

The enemies can sometimes sneak up on you, as the levels contain secret passages, both for you to discover additional equipment and tricks and to allow surprise attacks. The levels are nicely put together, with a good flow and a few moments that really punch you in the face.

Get your teeth into a meaty challenge.

Those shocks can drop you into significant fights frequently, and I recommend you remember the saying "discretion is the better part of valour". Occasionally, you will need to run away. That is allowed. And probably wise.

If you're like me, you'll see this a lot.

It's a fun game. It's action packed, will kill you often enough to make the successes sweeter, and will pull you back if you rage quit. Give it a go.

Highly recommended.
