Niche Work If You Can Get It

This is a series of fun little 15 minute shorts looking at some of the more unusual ways people make a living. As I realise far too often (really should only be the once), there are a lot of fields about which I know effectively nothing. This stretches all the way from artists ("how do they make it look like that the actual thing?") to drag queens ("where do they get shoes?") This programme attempts to give you a quick look into some of the more unusual examples.

The first episode is about drone defence, primarily for security applications, such as preventing drone surveillance or avoiding the use of drones for smuggling contraband into prisons. (Or in the extreme cases, people out, although at that point you're basically flying a helicopter into the prison. Someone is going to notice.)

It's a relatively shallow look at the topic, mostly because at 15 minutes there's not a lot of time, but also because the programme tends to keep technical information relatively limited. While I can understand the desire not to lay out all the precise methods of preventing drone behaviour, a few more specifics about signal jamming and the protective systems that drones use when they're no longer in contact with a controller would be welcome. (More info available at the Drone Defence website as they provided the tech used to jam the drone in this episode.)

Still, as a brief introduction to the topic, not a terrible one, with a few little expert pop-ins and a pleasantly convesational tone throughout.

Recommended.
