That Was Then

Twenty years ago, Anna lived in a student house with six other people, making a film of their lives as her final thesis. Until one of them was stabbed to death.

The killer was brought to justice, and everyone more or less got on with their lives. Until a vigilante, the "Beeston Batman", hunts down an undiscovered alibi which gets the killer out on appeal. And leaves Anna wondering now who could have committed murder in that house all those years ago. The only remaining suspects are the six people who lived in the house, one of whom is Anna's husband.

The story is delivered through Anna's personal recordings of her investigation, and the tapes she made at the time as part of her project. She falls into the investigation hard, and takes an emotionally horrifying journey into fear and suspicion.

It's plotted very tightly, with a good cast and a decent soundscape giving a naturalistic feel to the recordings. Thus far it's terribly thrilling, and halfway through I'm very invested in the mystery. I'm certainly going to listen to the rest of it, but unfortunately, since there's no butler involved, I'm almost certainly not going to be able to solve it.

Highly recommended.
