Ah, magical girls again. Would it be a season without one?
Komugi is granted the power of the Tomoe-E magical girl, by a magical creature, Usa-P, by magic. She attempts to capture escaped magical monsters, by magic, and then turn them in to magical cards.
Just in case it's not obvious, this is a parody. Of two things, impressively. There's the magical girl aspect, but there's also an idol side of things, in that Komugi is a schoolgirl with a part time job singing live adverts for a little shop.
She's joined in her life as Magical Nurse with two other schoolgirls, Magical Sister (Nun) and Magical Maid. Honestly, it's not about the fetishes. None of this is meant to be sexy.
It's a very self-aware show, which is both good and bad. There's a lot of silliness about the usual tropes, but it does also get a bit ponderous while trying to be clever with all its references. For instance, did you know Winnie the Pooh was a murderer?
It's unnecessarily "cute", but does at least have some interesting character moments. They're a bit variable (Komugi in particular is not a thrilling person), but the other two magical girls have decent personalities, and the ensemble is much rounder than you would normally expect. There are little side-plots given to each of them.
I'm not at all fond of the musical interludes however, as the plot is completed stopped for a couple of minutes of slightly oddly 3D skinned music video. It always feels badly out of place.
It doesn't do anything significantly wrong, but it also doesn't do anything novel or particularly well, and doesn't really add to the genre much. There's better stuff out there. Skip it.
Not recommended.
