Journey Into Stupid

Journey Into Stupid is one of Claude T.C.'s collection of webcomics, but I read the first three volumes of it in 'Zine form acquired from London Comic Con, in an oldschool printout with traditional ragged edges.

It's a gag comic, with not much initial continuity, but hints of an overarching plot sneak in, the deeper you go. It features a motley crew of misfits: San Francisco, the hater of trousers; Grumpy, who is; Orange, secretly a plant; Sputters, an exhibitionist hermaphroditic alien; Doctor, who is one (probably), and that one guy whose name changes every time, to a different film title. There's also aubergine monkey.

The art style (at least in these early comics) is simple, but that's part of the form. It's got unexpectedly clean lines, and the punch ramps up impressively for certain impactful moments (usually involving death monkeys or hydra penises). It's also remarkably detail heavy, running small panels and high content, meaning you get a lot in a single page.

Absolute nonsense.

Significantly funnier than I expected, even as a surreal piece, which I hadn't thought I was a massive fan of. Once the Overworld characters start turning up (the main cast live in the Underworld), the plot gets a bit more structure to it, and gags run on for more than a single page, but it never really leaves its "gag a day" roots.

Which is definitely to the better, as the gags are more than decent. It's likely to go into my webcomics bookmarks folder.
